Seated Statue of Nyoirin Kannon (Cintamanicakra)

The principal image of Zuishin-in is the Seated Statue of Nyoirin Kannon (Cintamanicakra), who is believed to bestow blessings in prosperity, marriage, and conception. The statue, housed in a miniature shrine known as the “palace”, is usually not open to the public.
This statue is thought to have been created as part of renovations to the temple complex, initiated around 1217 by High Priest Shingon, the first head priest of Zuishin-in. He also served as the chief abbot of Todai-ji Temple.
It is made using the yosegi-zukuri technique, which uses cypress wood finished with lacquer and gold leaf. The statue is depicted seated on a lotus pedestal with its right knee raised while the soles of the feet meet, a formation known as the royal ease position.
The hair is styled in a topknot, the slanted eyes are made of crystal, and the mouth is set in a firm expression, giving an air of resolve.
Among the six arms, the upper left arm holds a Cakraratna, the middle left arm rests a hand on Mount Potalaka, while the lower left arm holds a lotus. On the right side, the upper arm rests on its cheek, the middle arm originally held a rosary (now lost), and the lower arm holds a gem.
The balanced overall view of the gracefully extended limbs and the well-arranged clothing is highly regarded as an excellent example of Kei school sculpture.
